Cracking Down On Spam Text Messages

The Federal Trade Commission, (FTC)  has filed 8 complaints against nearly 30  defendants just this week alone for sending spam text messages to consumers.

According to the FTC,  the defendants spammed consumers with more than 180 million text messages offering “free” $1,000 gift cards to popular retailers but then required consumers to pay for a subscription to a service, apply for credit or enter sensitive personal information before they could get their “free” gift card.

The FTC is going after those who sent the spam text messages,  as well as the operators of the deceptive websites, the list of defendants include:  SubscriberBASE Holdings Inc, All Square Marketing, LLC; Threadpoint, LLC; PC Global Investments, LLC; Slash 20, LLC;   and Mazzco Marketing, Inc.  The spammers got paid by the website operators based on how many consumers they could get to enter information. The website operators were then paid by the businesses who gained customers through the process.
